Tel Aviv is a city that is perfect for getting around by bicycle. With so many bike paths and increasing awareness of cycling as an eco-friendly form of transportation, the city is definitely becoming more 'bike friendly'. It’s quite common to see locals on their bikes heading to work or school, stopping for coffee or zipping around town.
The main cycle path in Tel Aviv starts from Jaffa in the south, runs through central Tel Aviv and along the beachfront up to Bat Yam in the north. You can take it all or part of it depending on your destination. The path is relatively direct and not too crowded (unless its hot summer day) although there are some detours due to construction sites along the route.
You will find plenty of bike rental shops around town with different options depending on your budget; from low cost single speed bikes to higher-end road bikes with up-to-date parts. Most places allow you rent hourly, daily or weekly, although no extra charge if you bring it back late as long as you tell them about your delay.
If renting isn't your thing but you still want to be part of cyclists’ movement there are places where you can buy used bicycles (in various conditions), fixies, cruisers and other types.. Apart from second hand market Rami Levi stores usually have decent selection of new models at reasonable prices so its worth checking out.
What makes biking fun in Tel Aviv besides ‘eco friendliness’ - is that many roads have separate lanes for bicycles making them safer for cyclists; plus when weather permits - seeing sea front view while zipping near Mediteterranean waves is priceless. And nowadays renting an ebike gives much extra power if needed especially during Summer heatwave.
